Ender's Game

I decided to read Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. Published by Tom Doherty Associates, LLC. Card was born the third of six children in Washington but grew up in Santa Clara California. Card has won two science fiction award those being the Hugo and Nebula awards, The two top science fiction awards consecutively. And is an active member of the church.

The book takes place in the future on both earth and space. The Earth is nearing a war with an alien race dubbed the buggers. After the last two attacks earth is nearing its demise. Left with little option Earth starts to train military prodigy's from childhood to fight the third invasion. The main character after being inducted into the army quickly rises to the top ranks. He is believed to be the only thing that can same the human race from the third invasion. After many battles Ender comes to a shocking ending of his battle school training, something that he could have never seen coming.

"Sometimes lies are more dependable than the truth." pg. 2

"I don't care if i pass your test, I don't care if i follow your rules. If you can cheat so can I. I wont let you beat me unfairly, I'll beat you unfairly first." pg. 293

Two really important themes of this book to me are deceit and struggle. Deceit i would definitely say is the more important theme because the whole story is one big deceit. They continue to lie to Ender throughout the book for the better good, to me it is justifiable given the circumstance. Struggle is another important theme because they continue to throw obstacles at Ender never allowing him to settle, when things get tough they only get tougher. Although he is at the top of the talent at battle school it isn't easily earned.

In my opinion the book was amazing, science fiction is on of my favorite genres. To me it read like a movie, and i recently found out that one is coming out. Deceit for the better good is one of the themes that really touched me because it turns to who is in the better goods interest. And usually lying for the better good isn't justifiable. i can also relate to the feel of having to grow up quickly that i got from this book for a few different reasons. Overall i would definitely recommend this book to read if you haven't already, it is an absolute masterpiece.

  2. I love reading this book myself. I have a few times. Like you, I can not wait till the movie comes out later this year. I like how you touch base on the theme of deceit. After all, they have been deceitful to Ender his entire life. I hope that you read the rest of the series written by Orson Scott Card, the rest of the Ender's series is just as good!

  3. This sounds like a book that a lot of people just can't say enough good things about. I have read parts of it but this summer will put it on the list to read! That quote you included is powerful, "Sometimes lies are more dependable than the truth." I bet our class could have talked about that one for a good while.
